Last night at Corner Brook City Council, we tabled the individual Councillor expenses for the first half of 2011.
For the first half of 2011 I took two business trips where I represented the City of Corner Brook.
Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador
At the beginning of May, I traveled to Gander to attend the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador meeting.
My total expenses for that trip were $1,218.51. Please see below.
Federation of Canadian Municipalities
My second business trip was to Halifax in June to attend the Federation of Canadian Municipalities national meeting. My total expenses for that trip were $3,677.72.
My expense report below is for $1,874.57. The remaining $1,803.15 is for my airfare and conference registration which the City paid directly on my behalf.
Personal Vacation Days
So far this year I have also used 9.5 days of my personal vacation for City business.
Expense Questions
If you have any questions regarding my City business expenses please let me know.

I would like to ask what “council leave ” is exactly.
Thanks
Hi Bruce
Every Councillor is entitled to five Council leave days per year.
This is a way for a Councillor to bill back five days that they might use from their personal vacation days. This year for example, I have used 9.5 vacation days from my personal vacation bank. I can claim back five of those days?
Does that make sense?
Sorry, but I cant figure that out. Does it mean councillors get 5 or 9.5 or how many days of holidays at $250 per day?
Thanks
Each Councillor is allowed to claim up to five “council leave” days per year.
For each one of these leave days, we claim $250.
Ok thanks, and what is the yearly salary for a councillor? Also, how many total holiday days does a councillor get a year?
Thanks
Each Councillor makes $18,500 per year.
You can find the informaiton on the City website

As Councillors, we do not get any “holidays” as such because our positions are considered part time.
I work full time at the hospital here in Corner Brook. Like many other Councillors, I’ve taken personal holidays from my personal holidays to attend City business.
@bruce2233 This is a regular practice for anyone who has to take vacation to travel for business of an organization such as this. As local president of our Corner Brook’s branch of a large national union, we do the same thing. Use our vacation days so not to affect our employment and then get reimbursed by the organization.
Thanks for the transparency and sharing Gary! Keep it up.
