City of Corner Brook and IAFF Local 1222
I wanted to provide clarification about two points regarding the recent developments between the City of Corner Brook and IAFF Local 1222.
1. I supported the decision of Corner Brook City Council for workforce reduction of four of our professional fire fighters.
I did not make my decision lightly.
I believe a professional fire fighting department is an incredibly important service for our community. I also believe my decision to support the workforce reduction will not negatively impact the public safety of the people of Corner Brook.
I realize some of you may disagree with my position and I can respect that.
2. I’m incredibly disappointed that the City of Corner Brook issued four lay off notices moments after signing the four year collective agreement with Local 1222.
I did not support this decision when this was discussed at the Council table and I do not support this decision now.
Our timing in making this announcement was very poor. I would hope this sort of decision would not be duplicated again in the future.
